The Regional Food and Beverage Price Index (IPR-Food and Beverages) of the State of Paraná increased by 0.56% during April, a lower result than those recorded in the previous five months and a drop of 0.58 percentage points compared to to March (1.14%).

Among the six municipalities in Paraná covered in the index measured by the Paraná Institute for Economic and Social Development (Ipardes), the 0.06% drop in Cascavel stands out. The increases occurred in Curitiba (1%), Maringá (0.96%), Ponta Grossa (0.70%), Foz do Iguaçu (0.48%) and Londrina (0.26%).

Of the 35 products that make up the IPR, the monthly reductions in the prices of bananas (-18.68%), carioca beans (-7.12%) and black beans (-6.98%) stand out, explained by the improvement in production conditions and the expansion of stocks.

“The reduction in the prices of bananas, carioca and black beans is linked to an intensification of the harvest of these products, both fruits and legumes, which has favored an increase in the greater availability of these items on the shelves”, explains the director of the Center for Ipardes State Statistics, Marcelo Antonio.

Regionally, the reduction in the price of banana-caturra was most significant in Curitiba (-21.06%), followed by Ponta Grossa (-20.99%), Londrina (-20.21%), Foz do Iguaçu (-19 .91%), Maringá (-15.52%) and Cascavel (-14.12%).

Among the biggest increases reported in April were garlic (18.63%), onion (15.01%) and tomatoes (5.39%), adjustments linked to the finalization process of the latest harvests.

“These adjustments are linked to harvests that have already been or are being concluded. As a result, there is a reduction in stock of these products and a restriction on supply. Added to this is the scenario of crop failure for both onions and garlic, resulting from climate issues that impact agricultural production”, explained Marcelo Antonio.

An increase in the price of garlic was noted in April in Maringá, 22.79%, Londrina, 21.95%, Ponta Grossa, 18.17%, Curitiba, 17.50%, Cascavel, 16.68% and Foz do Iguaçu, 14.91%.

TWELVE MONTHS – With the numbers measured in April, the index accumulated over the last 12 months showed a slight drop in Paraná, closing the period with an acceleration of 2.80%. In municipal terms, the largest accumulated variation between May 2023 and April 2024 occurred in Foz do Iguaçu (3.57%), followed by Cascavel (3.48%), Maringá (2.72%), Ponta Grossa (2. 53%), Londrina (2.52%) and Curitiba (1.93%).

Among the foods with the biggest negative changes accumulated in the last 12 months are soybean oil (-17.42%), wheat flour (-14.35%) and margarine (-11.79%). The biggest drops in soybean oil were seen in Curitiba (-20.92%), followed by Maringá (-19.15%), Ponta Grossa (-18.64%), Cascavel (-17.98%), Foz from Iguaçu (-15.74%) and Londrina (-11.80%).

Among the increases in the period, the highlight is onions, oranges and garlic, with respective adjustments of 92.59%, 63.11% and 58.83%. Regionally, the biggest increases in onions were seen in Londrina (107.06%), followed by Maringá (105.94%), Ponta Grossa (95.91%), Curitiba (95.47%), Cascavel (82.57 %) and Foz do Iguaçu (71.18%).

INDICATOR – Launched on December 15, 2022, the IPR uses tax records from the Paraná State Revenue Service. Ipardes records an average of 382 thousand records of electronic invoices per month issued in 366 commercial establishments of different sizes located in Curitiba, Londrina, Maringá, Cascavel, Ponta Grossa and Foz do Iguaçu.

The 35 products evaluated were defined based on the Family Budget Survey of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) for Paraná and represent around 65% of food and beverage purchases by people from Paraná. The Institute also worked on the historical price series since 2020, which allows analyzing the fluctuation in the price of food and drinks in the last two years in the State.

With the detailed analysis of the indices by Ipardes, the largest cities in Paraná are able to know exactly the behavior of food prices, which has a relevant impact on the lives of citizens. The data is important, for example, for the development of more targeted regional and state public policies depending on the inflationary situation in each city.
