Comusa catchment is resumed and water supply begins to be reestablished in Novo Hamburgo

Water collection is 100% normal in Novo Hamburgo. The announcement was made this Tuesday morning (7) by the vice-mayor of Novo Hamburgo and general director of Comusa, Márcio Lüders. The first neighborhood to have the service restored will be the Center, where the hospitals are located.

Lüders reiterated that the capture was activated at 10 pm. However, because the net is completely dry, breaks may occur during the day. The expectation is that all regions of the municipality will be reached by Friday (10) at the latest. “But the objective is for this to happen sooner,” said the director.

This morning the level of the Rio dos Sinos reached 8.18 meters, still above the flood level, but with the possibility of capture.

Regarding the color of the water, Lüders explains that at first it may be darker, however, it is completely drinkable. “The treatment was reestablished on Monday night (6). Therefore, we guarantee quality.”

Residents’ reports

It was around 4:30 am this Tuesday when the pipes in Estela Borba’s house, in the Santo Afonso neighborhood, started receiving water. The noise of air being expelled from the pipes was so loud that the resident woke up.

Seeing that, when she turned on the tap, the house was finally supplied with water after eight days, she didn’t think twice: she took a bucket, cloth and squeegee and started cleaning the house, starting with the bathrooms. “I managed to take a shower, without using a mug”, she celebrated.

Residents of the Canudos neighborhood also reported that the water had already returned to their taps during the early hours of the morning, although it was weak. “This is also normal, the pressure can fluctuate”, adds Lüders

22 hours of work

According to the general director, there were 22 hours of uninterrupted cleaning, checking, electrical and electronic testing. The operation to replace the engines should have started on Monday morning, however, the high level of the river meant that the service was postponed to the afternoon shift.

Comusa faced problems with generators, managing to restore the process before dawn.
