Bricklayer José Antônio da Silva, 61 years old, arrived at the registry office of the 14th Electoral Zone, in Todos os Santos, in the North Zone, at 6am, to obtain his title. He complained, however, about the start of opening hours: 11am.

“We are in this hot sun, without deserving it, but it’s a mandatory thing, there’s nothing we can do. I need to take away the title, because I lost mine and I can’t go without voting in the next elections. Everyone has to do their part As you only have until tomorrow. [quarta]I came today [terça] so as not to delay any longer.”
Ana Gabriela Ferreira was also in the Todos os Santos Electoral Zone, on Rua Getúlio, trying to find out why her title was cancelled. To the DAYshe explained that she discovered the problem when she went to vote in the 2022 presidential election.

“I wasn’t able to vote that time and I ended up letting it go, we’re pushing ourselves with our stomachs. I came to resolve this because in addition to not being able to vote in the next elections, we end up not being able to do a lot of things, not even open a bank account. So there’s no way, it has to be resolved”, said Ana Gabriela, who arrived at the queue around 7am.

Hairdresser Jupira Costa, 60, and psychopedagogue Cláudia Coutinho, 61, met in line at the 14th Electoral Zone, while waiting to undergo biometrics. “There are people who work at these times and can’t come. We can’t just think about ourselves, it has to be good for everyone. How are these people going to do it? And it’s very hot, so it’s very difficult to stay in line, you have to having more time. But, as there is nothing to do, just having the strength and patience to wait in line and resolve it, is one less headache”, questioned Jupira.

“I came yesterday [à 14ª Zona Eleitoral] and it was crowded. As it is the penultimate day, it was no longer possible to postpone it. I think they had to extend the deadline. There were a lot of holidays in a row, there was a Madonna show, and people didn’t have time to come. I think I needed more time”, said Cláudia.

Retired Henrique Jorge Martins, 66, arrived around 8am. “It’s a Brazilian habit, really, I left it until the last minute. I kept putting it off until later and now there’s no escape, I had to come and resolve it. I need to change my address and see if there is anything to settle. As the deadline is already When it was over, I came early to make sure I could make it”, he said.

Those who are voting for the first time are also rushing to avoid missing the deadline for issuing the title.

“I kept putting it off, because I study and didn’t pay attention to the deadlines, I thought that as the elections are towards the end of the year, I would have all this time to get my degree. A friend alerted me to the date and I came in a rush. I came yesterday around 1pm, but it was very busy, so they told me about the opening hours, and I decided to come today [terça] earlier. Now, at 18, I can’t put it off any longer. I’m taking the entrance exam and to get into college, I need the degree, so there’s no way I can put it off until later”, revealed Ana Carolina Barbato, 18 years old, who also sought out the service center in Todos os Santos.

Queues also formed in the South Zone. Tuane Luisa, 30, was in the 3rd Electoral Zone, on Rua Conde de Baependi, in Flamengo, and complained about the lack of organization. “There is no one to give us information, you’re welcome. The employees who come in are also super ignorant, they don’t give us information. There are mothers here with children and there are elderly people too”, he criticized.

The next elections for mayors and councilors will take place on October 6th (first round) and 27th (second round).

The Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) offers services such as biometric registration, issuance of the first copy of the document, change of address or transfer of the voting location until this Wednesday (8). All services, with the exception of biometrics, are also available 100% online.

Voters who wish to register biometrics or perform other services in person must contact one of the 183 electoral offices or Voter Service Centers, spread across the state, between 11am and 7pm.

Currently, almost 67% of voters have completed biometric registration throughout the state of Rio de Janeiro. In total, 12,977,981 people from Rio de Janeiro are eligible for the procedure, but less than 9,000 have joined.

Deadline will not be extended

When contacted, the TRE informed, through its advisors, that “there is no chance of the deadline being extended, because this is a legal determination. The Electoral Registration needs to be closed 150 days before the election”.

Services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis and there is no need to schedule an appointment. It is necessary to present an official document with photo and proof of residence issued less than three months ago.

The deadline, May 8, refers to requests and applications for voters to be eligible for the next municipal vote. The services, however, have a response deadline and may exceed this date.

Voters who have questions can call the TRE Telephone Service Center, from Monday to Friday, from 11am to 7pm. The number is (21) 3436-9000.
