This Tuesday (7), at 8 pm, the show “Celebrando a Amazonas Band” will take place at Teatro Amazonas, with compositions that mark 23 years of the artistic body of the Government of Amazonas, administered by the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy.

Conducted by Rui Carvalho, the show will also showcase the legacy of the band that has been revolutionizing jazz culture in the North Region. Tickets are on sale at the theater box office and on the website www.shopingingresso.com.br.

The Amazonas Band is one of the artistic bodies, created in 2000, by the State Government and reformulated with the arrival of the Portuguese conductor, Rui Carvalho. He is the one who has been organizing the arrival of big names in national and international jazz to perform with the Amazonas Band, in Manaus.

“This Tuesday’s show has a very special meaning, as it was on that same date, 23 years ago, that I arrived in Amazonas to establish the foundations of my contract as conductor of the Amazonas Band”, recalls the maestro.

“The repertoire will have compositions that have marked the group over the years and are very representative of my life, and of the musicians that make up the Band. They are talented musicians who have been building a legacy of good music for the population of Amazonas”, comments Rui.

The repertoire of the show “Celebrando a Amazonas Band” will feature the songs “Morning Dance” by American saxophonist Jay Beckenstein; “Ponta Negra”, written by Rui Carvalho during the Covid-19 pandemic; “É Luxo Só” by Ary Barroso, a great exponent of Brazilian Popular Music; “O morro não tem tempo”, “Triste” and “Samba de uma Nota Só”, all three by Tom Jobim; “Beat Different” by Durval Ferreira; “Aquele Abraço” and “Palco” by Gilberto Gil.

Jazz in Amazonas

The conductor and artistic director of the Amazonas Band, Rui Carvalho, was born in Portugal and, in the 70s, went to study music in Sweden. In 1978 he lived in São Paulo, where he remained for 23 years. His musical career in Amazonas began in 2001, promoting jazz and its aspects. Rui is also artistic director of the Amazonas Green Jazz Festival, considered one of the biggest festivals in Latin America and which this year is in its 12th edition.

Amazonas Band also has three CDs: “Amazonas Band with Vinicius Dorin, released in 2010; Amazonas Band invites Gilson Peranzzeta and Mauro Senise, from 2013; and the most recent entitled “Randy Brecker Live in Amazonas”, released during last year’s Amazonas Green Jazz Festival, with one of the greatest trumpet players of all time, the American Randy Brecker, as well as saxophonists from São Paulo Felipe Salles and Rodrigo Ursaia.
