The main occurrence continues to be excessive speed on the roads, responsible for almost 47% of the total fines issued

This month, Yellow May takes place, a period dedicated to raising awareness among drivers and pedestrians and the commitment to the safety of everyone on the roads. Taking advantage of the opportunity, ES Brasil looked for important data about Espírito Santo, which shows the importance and effectiveness of traffic education. We started our series by presenting the reduction in the number of deaths on Espírito Santo’s roads and, now, we bring another good result: the drop in the number of fines.

Espírito Santo has shown good results in the first four months of this year compared to the same period in 2023. While 325,323 infractions were recorded that are transformed into fines from January to April, last year there were almost 14% more, totaling 375,786 situations, according to data from the Traffic Observatory of the State Traffic Department of Espírito Santo (Detran|ES).

The main infraction continues to be speeding allowed on the roads, with 152,783 records, which represents almost 47% of the fines incurred in Espírito Santo until the end of April this year. Comparing with the same period in 2023, there was a reduction this year of more than 77 thousand cases. This type of infraction is one of the most common, with fines ranging between R$130.16 and R$880.41 and the possibility of suspension of the driver’s license.

According to the coordinator of the Urban Mobility Center at Insper’s Arq. Futuro de Cidades Laboratory, Sérgio Avelleda, speed management is fundamental to reducing deaths in collisions. At 30 km/h, there is a 90% chance of survival in the event of being run over, while at 50 km/h this possibility drops to just 25%.

“Brazilians ‘glamorize’ speed and, above all, do not receive adequate training to understand the risks involved in driving a vehicle. Therefore, it is up to the authorities, especially on urban roads with a lot of pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable people, to correctly manage speed limits”, he explains in his article published in June 2023.

Excessive speed can result in tragedies. From January to April 2024, traffic killed 256 people in Espírito Santo, totaling two deaths per day as a result of accidents. The number is still lower than in the same period in 2023, when 281 people lost their lives in traffic in Espírito Santo, totaling 825 deaths in the entire year 2023.

For the general director of Detran|ES, Givaldo Vieira, the death data is still alarming. “We are seeing high numbers of traffic deaths. There are two lives lost every day and traffic accidents do not choose their victims, they can be poor or rich, by car, on foot or on a bicycle. We are all subject to this risk and people we love are also subject to losing their lives or being injured in minor or serious accidents”, he reflects.

Campaign

In order to start the Yellow May 2024 actions in the State, Detran|ES will carry out a series of activities. Last Thursday (02), a large yellow bow, a crashed car and a totem with statistics on traffic deaths were placed in front of the organization’s headquarters in Vitória to draw the attention of drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians. about the importance of being responsible in traffic. In addition, agents from Detran|ES will carry out educational approaches in the region throughout the month.
