The heavy rains that have hit Rio Grande do Sul since last week have already impacted almost 850,000 people, according to the latest bulletin released by Civil Defense. The scenario is worrying, with 78 confirmed deaths and four more under investigation, in addition to 175 injured and 105 missing.

Due to the bad weather, more than 134,000 people had to leave their homes, with 115,844 homeless and another 18,487 in shelters. The total number of municipalities affected by rain-related events reaches 341, which represents a large area affected in the state.

Compared to the last environmental catastrophe in 2023, when 54 people lost their lives after the passage of an extratropical cyclone, this current climate disaster is considered the worst in Rio Grande do Sul’s history due to the high number of deaths.

Furthermore, infrastructure services are compromised, with more than 261 thousand points without electricity and more than 854 thousand without water supply. Highways were also affected, with 110 sections blocked, impacting transport and mobility in the region.

Schools are also suffering from the floods, with 733 schools in 229 municipalities affected, with more than 247 thousand students impacted. The scenario is one of challenge and mobilization to guarantee the return of educational activities safely.

In light of the Civil Defense alert, the population can register to receive weather alerts and important information about the prevention of natural disasters. The service is available by sending the zip code via SMS or Whatsapp, aiming to ensure the safety and protection of the population in times of crisis.

The state remains mobilized to face the consequences of these heavy rains and ensure the necessary support for those affected. The work of authorities and relief organizations is essential to minimize damage and provide assistance to victims in this time of difficulty and overcoming.
