Aiming to increase the capacity of professionals and institutions to apply transdisciplinary approaches in facing global change challenges, the IAI (Inter-American Institute for Research on Global Change), in partnership with the Santa Catarina Research Support Foundation (Fapesc), opens registrations for the training program Tropical Forests in the Americas: Transdisciplinary Approaches for Changing Environments.

The program aims to develop researchers, public policy makers, civil society representatives and community leaders in science-politics, communication and engagement with stakeholders (stakeholders) with regard to the sustainability of tropical forests in the Americas. Transdisciplinary teams made up of academics and non-academics, proficient in English or Spanish, are welcome as long as they are citizens of one of the IAI member countries, as is the case of Brazil through the IAI’s partnership with Fapesc. Candidates directly involved with the demands of communities, especially indigenous peoples and other traditional populations, dependent on these ecosystems will be prioritized.

Registration for the notice is open until May 20, 2024 and to register, access the notice at the IAI website and fill in the interest form.

This notice is divided into different thematic areas that aim to produce innovative solutions to challenges related to: 1) Deforestation, sustainable development and locally led economy; 2) Ecosystem function, connectivity and climate change; 3) Justice and environmental governance.

Divided into two phases, the training will offer a free online course with asynchronous modules and live synchronous sessions, in English and Spanish (interpreter). In the first phase, topics such as developing transdisciplinary collaborations, writing research projects and participatory research methodologies will be covered. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate issued by the IAI.

During the second phase, up to five projects will be selected to receive financial support from IAI and Fapesc. Selected project teams will receive guidance and networking assistance from IAI.
