Senator agreed with “obvious” editorial from “Estadão”, but highlighted the importance of combating misinformation

Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) highlighted on Monday (April 29, 2024) an editorial in the State of S. Paulopublished the previous week, in which the newspaper states that “Brazil is not living under a dictatorship of the Judiciary”.

The congressman stated that, despite the newspaper’s findings being “obvious”the country is going through times when fake news and hate speech seek “put scientific truths, civilizational achievements and institutional frameworks into disrepute”.

“Dictatorship concentrates powers, restricts the press, ends free elections and prevents Parliament from functioning, and the people from demonstrating – nothing like what we see today in Brazil, despite demonstrations based on the false premise that the country would be subjected to a ‘dictatorship’; in particular, a ‘dictatorship of the Judiciary’, materialized by a series of decisions by the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Alexandre de Moraes.”

Kajuru argued that Brazil is mature enough to know that democracy is non-negotiable, being the form of government that most facilitates the search for reducing inequalities, through dialogue, tolerance and respect for voters’ decisions.
