Rio Grande do Norte had, between the months of January and April this year, a volume of rainfall 34% above expectations for the period, according to the Monitoring System of the Agricultural Research Company of Rio Grande do Norte (Emparn).
The analysis was released this Sunday (5) by the company, after the closing of data for the month of April (see below).
In the first four months of the year, it rained 643.8 millimeters on average in Rio Grande do Norte. What was expected, according to Emparn, was 477.8mm.
The regions with the highest accumulations between January and April they were:
- West Potiguar, with 709.7mm
- Central Potiguarwith 658.1mm,
- East Potiguarwith 650mm,
- Agreste Potiguarwith 557.2mm
April: 17% above expected
The month of April ended with average rainfall 17% up than expected, according to Emparn. The state closed the month with 194mm of accumulated volume of rain – above the 164.8mm expected.
The company reported that the average was above in all regions of Rio Grande do Norte, but that the Agreste regions, with volumes 36.6% above the average, and Leste Potiguar, with 25.7%, were the rainiest in the period .
The rainfall averages, by region, were:
- Agreste Potiguar, with 181.6mm
- East Potiguar, with 246.1mm
- Oeste Potiguar, with 194mm
- Central Potiguar, with 154.2mm
The capital Natal rained 284.8 mm on average in April. Other municipalities with the most rain in the period, by region, were:
- in Agreste Potiguar – Campo Redondo, with 332.6 mm
- in Oeste Potiguar – Martins, with 345.5 mm.
- in East Potiguar – Nísia Floresta, with 255.2 mm, and São Miguel do Gostoso, with 241.8 mm.
According to the head of Emparn’s Meteorology unit, Gilmar Bristot, the action of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ZCTI) was the main meteorological system causing the rains in the period.
He highlighted the increase caused by the ZCTI “associated with the warming of the Atlantic Ocean – with temperatures between 1ºC and 2°C above average – increasing the humidity that advanced into the territory and favored the formation of rain clouds”.
The forecast for the month of May is for continued rain across the entire state of Rio Grande do Norte, according to Emparn. The minimum volume expected for the state is 108.7 mm.
By region, the expected volumes are:
- East Potiguar- 171.1 mm
- Oeste Potiguar- 101.4 mm
- Agreste Potiguar- 91 mm
- Central Potiguar – 71.5 mm

- Saturday (11/05) – Partially cloudy skies with rain in the Mossoró and Vale do Açu region. In other regions, partly cloudy to clear skies.
