Rains leave prisons isolated in RS; ministry demands actions

Another unit affected was the Arroio do Meio State Prison. Unit is isolated due to collapsed bridges and blockage of the local road, according to Secom.

Ministry of Justice requested information on the situation in prisons. The National Council for Criminal and Penitentiary Policy, of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, sent letters to the state government to demand information about the state actions being adopted in the affected prison units.

The documents were forwarded to authorities in RS. The request for explanations was sent to the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), the superintendent of the state’s Penitentiary Services, Mateus Schwartz dos Anjos, and the secretary of Penal and Socio-Educational Systems, Luiz Henrique Viana.
