A symbol of Brazilian cultural diversity, artisanal production will be highlighted in the Federal District between Wednesday (8) and Sunday (12), during the 17th Craft Salon. The event opens the national calendar of sector fairs this year, and will bring together works by more than 500 manual artists, on the balcony of the Pátio Brasil shopping mall.

“The Crafts Hall is a great opportunity for artisans to present their techniques, sell their products and generate employment and income. Culture and stories are represented by these artists, through their work. The GDF has increasingly sought to value and support the crafts of our capital”

Cristiano Araújo, Secretary of Tourism

The hall has a partnership with the Government of the Federal District (GDF), through the support of the secretariats of Tourism (Setur) and Culture and Creative Economy (Secec). In this edition, it coincides with Mother’s Day week, a date that illustrates the theme “Crafts: the Mother of All Arts”.

The expectation is that 60 thousand people will visit the stands during the five days of the event. Visitors will be able to closely observe unique crafts using types such as ceramics, wood, threads, grass, straw, metal, lace, embroidery and others. In total, there will be around 80 thousand pieces.

According to the Secretary of Tourism, Cristiano Araújo, the exhibition is an important opportunity to exchange experiences and get in touch with artistic expressions from all regions of the country. Artisans from 23 states and the DF will be represented.

Culture and stories are represented by these artists, through their work. The GDF has increasingly sought to value and support the crafts of our capital”, says Araújo.

Furthermore, the event boosts the DF’s creative economy and tourism sectors, through the participation of manual artists from other states, business rounds and unique commercial possibilities for the segment. The organization estimates a turnover of R$4 million in local sales and future business, in addition to the generation of a thousand direct jobs and three thousand indirect jobs.

“The event is relevant to the Federal District because it brings to the city the best we have in artisanal production from all states”, says the executive director of Rome Eventos, Leda Simone, organizer of the show this year. “For artisans, it promotes an exchange of experiences, using products and techniques from other artists, and, for the community, it is a unique moment to find products from all regions in one place”, she highlights.

The hall also gives visibility to the crafts produced in the DF. Of the 500 exhibitors across the country, around 100 are from the federal capital. Among them, master artisan Cleziania Ribeiro, 45 years old, who produces ceramic sculptures.

The resident of Ceilândia has participated in the initiative for at least three editions, thanks to the support of the Department of Tourism. “Participating in these events is very important because it allows us to have a showcase to sell our products in a highly visible location”, says the artisan.

stand with capacity for 20 artisans to present their products, free of charge, and another to house another 10 artists, who will be welcomed by the Brazilian Crafts Program (PAB).

In Cleziania’s view, the more than 30-year partnership with Setur provides many opportunities for manual workers in the DF. “The secretariat provides the spaces to us, which gives us visibility and access to places that we, as artisans, often do not have the means to invest in. So, with Setur, we can access places that would be inaccessible to us”, she reports.

The event is open to the public and has free entry. In addition to purchasing exclusive pieces handcrafted by artists, visitors will also be able to take advantage of free workshops on practices such as tapestry, embroidery and ceramics, upon prior registration on the event website.
