Jairo Jorge said that transfer in the unit left 2 patients dead, not 9, as he had previously reported
The mayor of Canoas (RS), Jairo Jorge (PSD), corrected on Saturday (May 4, 2024) the information that 9 people had died after an ICU (Intensive Care Unit) was flooded in the city. According to him, the information is false. In fact, there were 13 people in the units, but only two died during the transfer.
Jairo Jorge also said that the deaths were due to the severity of the clinical conditions of the 2 patients. One of them was already brain dead. The other suffered several fractures after throwing himself from a building. The mayor denied that the deaths were caused by the flooding of the ICU.
Jairo stated that the news of the 9 deaths was “invented” It is “implanted”. He asked the population to only pass on information when there is certainty of the fact so as not to mislead others.
“Sometimes this misinformation, fake news, news that is often not true, ends up generating this”said the head of the local Executive in a video published on his Instagram profile.
It was the mayor himself who had recorded a video to report the 9 deaths. In a call with minister Paulo Pimenta (Secom), Jairo declared that there was “collapse” in the ICU.
“The water came in, there was a collapse in the ICU, there was a power problem, we tried to keep the patients safe and we couldn’t. 9 diedsaid the mayor in a call to the minister on Saturday (May 4).
The municipality of Canoas is the 3rd most populous city in Rio Grande do Sul, with 357.7 thousand people. It is behind only Porto Alegre (1,332,845) and Caxias do Sul (463,338), according to data from the 2022 IBGE census.
As of 9am this Sunday (May 5), the number of deaths due to the rains in Rio Grande do Sul was 66, according to information released by the State’s Civil Defense. Another 67 people remain missing.
