The tragedy caused by the heavy rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul is worsened by the isolation of entire cities, which even this Saturday, May 4, 2024, is one of the biggest problems.

The main means of land transport are affected.

Dozens of highways have been blocked since the beginning of the week and there are no plans to open several sections.

The bus station in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, had to be closed, with all trips being cancelled, after being taken over by water.

Bus company yards and garages were flooded, covering up some of the large vehicles that were damaged.

O Transport Diary received images of one of these garages in Porto Alegre that houses buses from the companies Viação Ouro e Prata and Expresso Planalto.

As the report showed, some buses from the companies Planalto and Unesul had to be taken to the Olympic Stadium to free the vehicles from the floods.

Remember:

In another image, on the highway that forms part of the connection between Caxias do Sul, Santa Rosa and Foz do Iguaçu, large vehicles such as Unesul buses and trucks were dragged off the road. There is no information about serious injuries.

Central roads in Porto Alegre remain affected.

Trains from Trensurb’s metro rail services, in Porto Alegre and the region, stopped running this Friday afternoon (03) and should only return to operation on Monday (06).

Humanitarian aid has arrived by helicopters and planes, but also with difficulties.

Other states have mobilized aid, such as São Paulo, which sent Military Police helicopters to Rio Grande do Sul.

The work that already included the assistance of the Águia 12 aircraft will be reinforced this Saturday (4) with the arrival of Águia 33 and Águia 24. They departed in the morning from São Paulo. The forecast is to make two stops in Santa Catarina and arrive in Rio Grande do Sul at around 4pm.

The Águia 23 is a model with aeromedical transport capacity, including an ICU and capacity to transport up to seven people.

In total, there are already 56 professionals from São Paulo helping the population of Rio Grande do Sul, including firefighters, nurses, geologists and military personnel, in addition to the support of two sniffer dogs.

Military police officers from São Paulo, with agents from the Fire Department and the Aviation Command, work to locate and provide medical assistance to buried victims, rescue stranded people and search for missing people.

A King Air plane was also made available by the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP-SP) to support the transport of teams to the south of the country.

The Civil Defense of SP sent six agents and a geologist to Rio Grande do Sul to assist the victims and provide technical support to the authorities in Rio Grande do Sul. The agency helps with the construction of a regional humanitarian aid logistics center in the city of Estrela, in the Taquarí Valley, as explained by Civil Defense captain Roberto Farina.

“The city of Lajeado, which has the advanced command post, has access problems because the Taquari River bridge, which connects Estrela to Lajeado, was blocked, meaning that we still do not have access by land”, states.

Social Fund

The Social Fund of São Paulo (FUSSP) and the State’s Civil Defense begin this Sunday (5) a humanitarian campaign in favor of the victims of the recent rains in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The SP Government’s action aims to collect water drinking, hygiene and cleaning items to provide assistance to affected communities.

Donations must be delivered to the Social Fund depository, located at Avenida Marechal Mário Guedes, 301, in the Jaguaré neighborhood in the Capital. The site will be open from 8am this Sunday to receive donations. During the week, donations can be delivered from 8am to 5pm at the same location. The transport of inputs to Rio Grande do Sul will be carried out by the airlines Gol and Azul, which volunteered to send the donations by air, due to the various roadblocks.

In preparation for the start of the campaign, FUSSP employees will dedicate Saturday to organizing the location for receiving donations, ensuring efficient and agile logistics for the collection process.
