After civil defense reinforced the flood alert status around Lagoa dos Patos for another 24 hours, the city councils of Pelotas and Rio Grande also reinforced their requests for attention.
In a second live broadcast this Saturday afternoon, the mayor of Pelotas, Paula Mascarenhas (PSDB), said that the works on the Estrada do Engenho dike are precautionary, to increase the level of containment and avoid major problems. The region is one of those at risk, as well as Quadrado, Doquinhas, around the bridge to Rio Grande, Colônia Z-3 and Pontal da Barra. All dikes are being reviewed and areas are undergoing reinforcement work.
The Mayor stated that she will maintain real-time information on the City Hall’s social networks. There are currently 230 people living in Pelotas outside their homes, from around 60 families. There are spaces for shelter and the teams are constantly monitoring and evaluating the locations.

This Saturday afternoon Civil Defense and Municipal Secretariats met at the Municipal Palace to coordinate actions to combat the rising levels of Lagoa dos Patos and the resulting flooding. The Municipality organizes the availability of places to shelter families that may be displaced, both in rural and urban areas.
According to the City Hall’s communications department, the places at risk are the island regions and coastal neighborhoods (Lagoa, Saco da Mangueira and Barra)
Only General Deodoro Street is blocked so far to prevent water from moving into homes due to the movement of vehicles.
There is a shelter set up at Clube Camponês, in Arraial and one in preparation at Lemos Junior, in the Center.
