The bad weather conditions in Santa Catarina will continue throughout this weekend. Late this Saturday morning (4), Civil Defense issued a meteorological alert for the high risk of floods, lightning, gusts of wind and landslides in the West and Far West regions of the state.
According to the most recent bulletin, atmospheric conditions for the development of isolated thunderstorms with lightning, gusts of wind, occasionally intense rain and occasional hail will persist until at least until Sunday (5).
The greatest risk is for regions close to the border with Rio Grande do Sul, a state in which 57 deaths and 74 injured people have already been confirmed. The number of missing people is 67. There are incidents registered in 300 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul.
On Friday (4), the Santa Catarina government confirmed one death as a result of the storms. A 61-year-old man was found dead by firefighters in an overturned car during flooding in the city of Ipira. At least 193 people are homeless, 46 are homeless and there is a record of one injured person in Caçador.
In Capinzal (SC), a crater opened in the urban area of the city and swallowed a house entirely. In the same municipality, at least 12 children were rescued from a school bus that was stranded in the floodwaters.
Still on Friday afternoon, Civil Defense confirmed the occurrence of a tornado between the municipalities of Passos Maia and Ponte Serrada, on Thursday (2). The phenomenon, characterized by the formation of a kind of wind funnel, even uprooted trees. The occurrence of the phenomenon was confirmed by meteorologists using radar images.
Intense to moderate rains may still occur on Sunday morning (5), especially in the south of Santa Catarina, according to Civil Defense. “In all areas bordering the state of Rio Grande do Sul, there are conditions for the development of isolated storms, with lightning, gusts of wind, occasionally intense rain and possible hail,” warned the agency.
