From January to April 30 of this year, Amazonas recorded 336 cases of human sporotrichosis, 331 of which were in Manaus alone. There are no deaths related to the disease. The data are from the Health Surveillance Foundation (FVS).

From January to February 15, 108 cases of human sporotrichosis were reported. Of these, 76 were confirmed and 21 were under investigation. Since then, the number of cases has increased by 342% compared to the months of March and April, with 260 new cases.

The FVS epidemiological report released last Tuesday (30) points out that, in addition to Manaus, the municipality of Presidente Figueiredo recorded three cases of the disease, followed by Barcelos and Careiro, in the interior of Amazonas, with one case of human sporotrichosis each .

Caused by fungi, the infection generally arises from scratches or bites from infected animals, which are also victims of this fungus, the Sporothrix brasiliensis. This year, cats are the biggest transmitters, with 80.1% of cases arising from contact with this animal.

Increase in the disease since 2022

In Manaus, around 75% of human contamination last year occurred through contact with infected animals, especially cats, affecting people aged between 20 and 59 years. The neighborhoods with the highest incidence of cases were in the West and South Zones of Manaus.

Among the municipalities in the interior, Presidente Figueiredo was the one with the highest number of cases, with 9 records.

In 2023, the months of June and August had the highest incidence. Confirmations occurred during consultations, with laboratory tests carried out to confirm the presence of sporotrichosis.

As a measure to combat human and animal sporotrichosis in Amazonas, the State Department of Health of Amazonas (SES-AM) created a working group, formed by several institutions in the health sector, in order to monitor the disease and define remedial actions. control and combat infection.

From January to April, 501 cases of animal sporotrichosis were reported in Amazonas, with 319 confirmed and 195 undergoing treatment. 122 euthanasias/deaths were recorded. The largest number of animals are cats (96.2%), followed by dogs (3.8%). The majority of the animals involved (70.1%) are male.
