Official opening of Yellow May 2024

Officially starting the activities of Yellow May 2024, the State Department of Traffic of Piauí (Detran-PI) gathered various entitiesthis Monday (2), to discuss the commitment to reducing traffic accidents in the state by half by 2030. With events throughout the state, Detran-PI leads a series of educational activities to raise awareness among the population about the importance of road safety.

According to Detran, Piauí is the national leader in fatal victims of motorcycle accidents and ranks third in deaths from traffic accidents. To reverse this situation, the state government launched the Pact for the Reduction of Traffic Accidents last year, joining the efforts of several government entities and bodies.

During Yellow May, Detran-PI is carrying out activities throughout the state, in partnership with the Department of Education (Seduc), to promote educational lectures in schools, aiming to raise awareness among young people about the importance of safe traffic from an early age. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Security Secretariat, inspection actions were intensified, aiming to curb infractions and ensure safer traffic for everyone.

There will be educational interventions and actions in several cities in the state, such as Oeiras, Picos, São Raimundo Nonato, Valença and Simões. Detran will also be present at the Forum for the Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Floriano, on the 3rd and 4th of May, and at the II Piauí Symposium on Traffic in Campo Maior, on the 8th of May. The official movement of the organization ends with a race on the 26th.

Luana Barradas, general director of Detran, highlights the importance of uniting all sectors of society in this challenge. “It’s a complex issue that needs everyone to join hands to draw attention so that we can raise awareness. If everyone does their part, we will have smoother traffic in Piauí”, she highlights.

According to Liliam Araújo, director of Escola Piauíense de Trânsito, it is essential that each citizen asks themselves what they are doing to contribute to road safety, whether as a passenger, pedestrian or driver. “As passengers, as pedestrians, as drivers? What are we doing to make traffic safer?” she asks.

In addition to raising awareness, inspection plays an important role in the effort to improve road safety, says Colonel Ramos, from the Military Police: “The Government has intensified traffic inspection in the interior of the State, where only 10% of traffic is municipalized. Inspection work seeks to preserve lives and implement peace in traffic.”

One of the main initiatives that make up Yellow Maio is the 1st Walk for Life, which takes place this Thursday (2), at 3pm, starting at the Avenida Rio Poti roundabout, in the Santa Maria da Codipi neighborhood, in Teresina. The symbolic walk aims to involve the community in the debate on traffic safety, with the motto “Peace in traffic starts with you”.

At the opening of the Campaign, the goal of reducing traffic accidents in the state by half by 2030 was discussed.
