On the morning of this Thursday (02), around 11:30 am, the level of the Taquari River rose by around 33 meters, leaving the municipality of Lajeado, in Rio Grande do Sul, completely submerged.

The flood is considered the biggest in history to date. The rains that have hit Rio Grande do Sul since the beginning of the week and Governor Eduardo Leite declared a public calamity.
Floods in Rio Grande do Sul
So far, 24 people have died as a result of the flood. Civil Defense records 13 deaths, and the Fire Department and Military Brigade (BM) confirm another 11 deaths.
There are still 21 people missing. In total, 147 cities recorded disruptions, such as floods, falling barriers and landslides. The most affected areas are the Central, Vales, Serra and Metropolitan regions of Porto Alegre.
According to Civil Defense, 67,800 people were affected by the effects of the bad weather. There are 14,500 residents away from home. There are 4,599 in shelters and 9,993 homeless (in the homes of family or friends).
