The biggest music festival in the country will have a day focused on national music, but it left out singers from the North; in 2022, the event injected R$1.7 billion into the economy

Artists from the North region repudiated on their social networks Rock in Rio 2024’s decision to dedicate a day of the festival to Brazilian music and leave out several names from the region.

The event will be held from September 13th to 22nd this year. “Brazil Day” is scheduled for September 21st and will feature singers of 14 different rhythms. The edition will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the festival, which began in 1985 (there will not be an edition of Rock In Rio in 2025).

The protest was started by Fafá de Belém from Pará. In a post on her Instagram profile this Tuesday (April 30, 2024), she questioned whether Amazonian, northern culture is not part of it” from Brazil.

“Will the North always be seen as a decorative piece for elite parties? It’s very sad to feel the force of reality hitting us in the face. The biggest music festival in the country has a BRAZIL DAY and puts us outside. Once again they prove to us that the North continues to be a folkloric item used as and when they want, for a cool image“, said Fafá.

The statement was commented on by other artists from the North, such as singer Joelma. “They won’t erase us. The north is also part of Brazilian culture!”he said.

On X (former Twitter), tecnobrega representative Gaby Amarantos asked: Do you want to hear our music, but don’t want to take us to sing it?“.

Marina Lima, from Rio, also joined the debate and complained about never having been invited to perform at the festival.
