Education in Minas Gerais achieved prominent position in the State Competitiveness Ranking, prepared by the Political Leadership Center (CLP). Remaining in second place in 2023, the state shows a continued commitment, governor Romeu Zema and by Secretary Igor de Alvarenga Oliveira Icassatti Rojas, with the strengthening of economic and social development through investments in the educational sector.

Such investments have demonstrated significant impacts not only in the local economy, but also in the population’s quality of life, positively reflected in educational indicators.

The Education pillar, essential in the aforementioned ranking, receives considerable attention from public managers. This pillar, together with Human Capital, forms the basis on which the socioeconomic development of a region is supported.

In this sense, Minas Gerais, alongside São Paulo and Paraná, is among the best positioned states. This further highlights the relevance of education as one of the main pillars of state competitiveness.

The state government’s commitment to school feeding is evidenced by the fact that the state invests twice the amounts transferred by the federal government in the National School Meal Program (PNAE).

These additional resources are used to ensure the diversity and quality of the food offered. However, regional particularities and student preferences are taken into account.

An example of this is Governor Romeu Zema’s request for the inclusion of the state education network in the Pé-de-Meia program, which provides for the granting of financial incentives to low-income high school students.

Through this program, low-income students enrolled in the final three grades of high school will receive financial deposits into their savings accounts to help them cover their educational expenses and encourage them to remain in school until they graduate from high school. . This initiative is an important tool to reduce school dropouts and promote the social and educational inclusion of the most vulnerable students.
