Brazil surpassed four million registered cases of dengue in 2024. This is what the Ministry of Health’s Arbovirus Monitoring Panel shows this Tuesday morning (30). In total, 4,127,571 probable cases of the disease were reported in the first four months of 2024. At the state level, according to the bulletin released by the Public Health Secretariat of Rio Grande do Norte (Sesap) on the 24th, RN had 16,772 cases reported dengue fever only this year.

Of the confirmed cases, the state already has a number of 2,587. Those discarded total 3,484.

The reported cases of dengue fever in the state in the first months of this year are already higher than in the whole of last year. Throughout the twelve months of 2023, the Public Health Secretariat of Rio Grande do Norte (Sesap) recorded 12,048 occurrences.

As for deaths from dengue, Brazil already has 1,937 confirmed cases and 2,345 under investigation. RN has so far had 1 confirmed death and 2 that are being investigated, according to a survey by the Ministry of Health. Last year there were three deaths from dengue in RN, throughout the year.

The most affected age group, both nationally and at the RN level, is 20 to 29 years old, which accounts for the majority of cases. The least affected age group is different in both cases: in the country as a whole, it is children under 1 year old; in RN, it is people aged 80 or over.

The Federation units with the highest incidence of dengue are the Federal District, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Espírito Santo, Goiás and Santa Catarina.

At the beginning of this year, a projection carried out by the Ministry of Health indicated that dengue cases in the country could reach 4,225,885.

Vaccine expansion

A guideline from the Ministry of Health came into force on the 18th so that the age range of the target audience for the dengue vaccine is extended to 6 to 16 years old.

This strategy is temporary, and only for vaccines that have an expiration date of this Tuesday, April 30th. To avoid wasting doses, the age range may be expanded up to the limit specified in the vaccine leaflet, which is from 4 to 59 years 11 months and 29 days of age, only in cases of necessity.

In total, 29 municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte received doses of the dengue vaccine. They are: Apodi, Areia Branca, Baraúna, Campo Grande, Caraúbas, Extremoz, Felipe Guerra, Governador Dix-Sept Rosado, Grossos, Janduís, Macaíba, Messias Targino, Mossoró, Natal, Parnamirim, São Gonçalo do Amarante, Serra do Mel, Tibau and Upanema. Ten more municipalities are added to this list, they are: Caicó, Pau dos Ferros, Ceará-Mirim, Santa Cruz, João Câmara, Touros, São Paulo do Potengi, Pendências, Luís Gomes and Jucurutu.
