Although the implementation of a new highway is the main and most important option to relieve BR-101, the expansion of a state road, SC-108, may be the closest option to create a parallel corridor with greater capacity. of traffic. The idea is not new: in 2018, within the BR-101 do Futuro working group, Fiesc already defended the proposal for more investments on the road between Joinville and Praia Grande, almost 500 km long. In the infrastructure agenda for 2024, the business entity included the section of SC-108 between Joinville and Guaramirim (Rodovia do Arroz) among the priority roads for inclusion in the Estrada Boa program for duplication.

SC-108 connects federal highways. The route in Joinville starts at BR-101, with a route to BR-280, in Guaramirim. The state road passes through Massaranduba until it reaches Blumenau, on BR-470. Next, the highway runs to the south of the state, also crossing BR 282 and 285. In the north, in the Joinville region, the only section under construction is the connection between Guaramirim and Massaranduba, 15 kilometers long.
In the previous state administration, there was a tender for the duplication of the entire segment between the two cities. However, the project was reviewed under the current government and the expansion will be a 3.8 km section, in Guaramirim, with revitalization of the rest. If there is a complete duplication of SC-108 between Joinville and Blumenau in the future, in a segment of 80 km, a corridor parallel to BR-280 in the North region will be reinforced.
The model proposed by Fiesc at the end of the last decade provided for concessions to the private sector, mainly in the stretch between Joinville and Blumenau. The study pointed to the expansion of SC-108 as an incentive for the development of surrounding cities, in addition to alternative traffic to BR-101. SC-108 also has at least 20 connections with the federal highway – which would facilitate access to the state road.

New road
However, vehicle movement has grown significantly in recent years and the main defense currently is a new road. The president of Fiesc, Mario Cezar de Aguiar, sees the expansion of the SC-108 as an important project, but one that will have more “emergency” impacts: for the director of the business entity, only the new coastal highway adequately meets the demand of Santa Catarina. The reference is the road between Joinville and around Florianópolis, in the executive project phase. The intended route is completely new.
