Law 18,897/2024, authored by deputy Jair Miotto (Union), was published in the Official State Gazette on Monday (22). The rule establishes a fine of R$840 for anyone who smokes cigarettes and tobacco products.

According to the author, the new rule complements State Law 7,592/1989, which deals with the prohibition of smoking in closed places.

Cigarette ban is to give ‘good examples to children’, says author of the law

According to Miotto, the text of the law had some changes, such as the reduction of the fine, which in the original text would be R$5,000.

According to the parliamentarian, the law wants to guarantee good examples for children and quality of health for adults who frequent parks and playgrounds in Santa Catarina.

“Those who seek a healthier life, adults, teenagers, young people and children, should not be forced to live with this addiction of others, even in the open air, which contains a mixture of toxic substances”, he said.

“Cigarette smoke contains toxins that produce irritation in the eyes, nose and throat, and cause lung problems, causing respiratory allergies in smokers and non-smokers”, he added.

Publication about the ban must take place on the official website of the State of Santa Catarina and in places that are easily accessible and visible to the public who frequent the parks, through signs.
