From the Blog Editor – The governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra (PSDB), said that there has been a disinvestment in public security in the State in recent years. The former mayor of Caruaru, who took office in 2023, said that the priority of her mandate will be improving the sector. She made the statements in an interview with CNN Brasil.

The governor stated that R$1 billion will be invested in public security. She also stated that she intends to improve the Pernambuco prison system which, according to her, is “the worst in Brazil” and create more places in penitentiaries. The interview will be shown on Saturday (April 27, 2024).

“Change does not happen overnight. What I have said is that we will not stand down, we will not sleep until we return peace and security to Pernambuco”, stated Lyra.

The governor also stated that, in addition to the breakdown in security, organized crime dominates the region, both inside and outside prisons, which makes police action difficult.

“Fighting organized crime cannot be done with speeches. It only exists by facing the problem, guaranteeing resources for it”, stated Lyra.
