An earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter Scale, considered low intensity, was recorded this Wednesday (24), in Ribeirão Cascalheira, 893 km from Cuiabá, according to the Brazilian Seismographic Network (RSBR).

Until now, There are no reports of residents in the region who felt the earthquake.

The last earthquake recorded in Mato Grosso occurred in Tabaporã, on February 29 of this year and had a magnitude of 2.6.

MT recorded one of the biggest earthquakes in Brazil

In 1955, one of the largest earthquakes recorded in Brazil occurred in the Serra do Tombador region, 370 km north of Cuiabá. A magnitude reached 6.2 degrees on the Richter Scale, according to the Geological Survey of Brazil.

Find outdifference between earthquake and earthquake

The Brazilian Geological Survey reported that when an earthquake is of low intensity, it is called a seismic shock or earthquake. However, the origin and nature are exactly the same, differing only by the extent of the rupture area.

The earthquake causes the emergence of seismic waves, which propagate in all directions. They can be of two types, primary waves (P waves) and secondary waves (S waves).

The relative size of earthquakes is called magnitude. It is measured using the so-called Richter Scale, created in 1935 by Charles Richter.

Also according to the Mineral Resources research company, linked to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, to get an idea of what a very strong earthquake is, if it reaches magnitude 9 on the Richter Scale, it will cause a crack that will cut the Earth’s crust. at a distance equal to that which separates Rio de Janeiro from São Paulo, with each block 10 m apart from the other.

But in 90% of cases, the magnitude of an earthquake is no more than 7.0 degrees.

Brazil is considered an earthquake-free country, which does not prevent some of them from being felt here. On June 8, 1994, for example, the city of Porto Alegre (RS) was hit by seismic waves caused by an earthquake that occurred in Bolivia, 2,200 km away.
