The project to implement bone marrow transplantation (HSCT) at the Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal (HBDF) was presented at a meeting between representatives of the HBDF, the Department of Health (SESDF) and the Institute for Strategic Health Management of the Federal District ( IgesDF), which hosted the meeting. The initiative is a partnership between SESDF and IgesDF.

“The collaboration between IgesDF and SESDF is essential to meet a public health demand as urgent as bone marrow transplantation. Only by joining forces will we be able to guarantee access to this much-needed treatment for patients in our region”, highlighted the superintendent of the HBDF, Guilherme Porfírio.

The head of the hospital’s Hematology, Hemotherapy and Bone Marrow Transplant Service, Luiz Henrique Athaides Ramos, explained that the project involves the treatment of neoplastic disease, the indication of HSCT, the way in which cells are collected, conditioned and infused, in addition to all support until the day of the “long-awaited spinal cord catch”. He also emphasized the necessary restructuring so that the designated HBDF floor receives the service.

According to the doctor, the implementation of bone marrow transplantation at HBDF is urgent, as there is currently a high unmet demand. “The DF should be a reference center for this type of treatment, considering its infrastructure, highly specialized human resources, as well as strategic positioning”, he assesses. “There is willingness, technical capacity and interest from the team to take on this demand, but political support and the provision of resources for structural adjustments and acquisition of necessary inputs and human resources are important”, he adds.

Outpatient care for transplant candidates will be provided in Hematology, with support from the emergency room and hospitalization when indicated. Validation of a 24-hour shift with hematology and hemotherapy specialists is being considered to ensure rapid response to patients’ urgent demands.
