During the four weekends in May, the government of Amazonas will carry out 120 orthopedic surgeries in Manaus. The operations began this Saturday (4) and will be carried out at the Hospitals and Emergency Rooms (HPSs) 28 de Agosto, in the Central-South Zone, and Dr. Aristóteles Platão Bezerra de Araújo, in the East Zone of the capital.

The State Department of Health (SES-AM) stated that the forecast is to treat around 120 patients this month, especially victims of traffic accidents.

“Our HPSs and our back-up units regularly perform orthopedic services, however, the number of these patients has grown considerably, increasing the demand for orthopedic surgeries”, pointed out the secretary of SES-AM, Nayara Maksoud.

Optimizing procedures, according to Nayara, will expand the offer, reducing the length of stay for patients in the units, especially victims of traffic accidents.

In Manaus, from January to April this year, the number of patients injured in traffic increased by 12.58%, compared to the same period in 2023. This year, the health units Hospital 28 de Agosto, Dr. Aristóteles Platão Bezerra de Araújo and Dr. João Lúcio Pereira Machado together treated more than 5 thousand patients who were victims of traffic accidents.

Despite accumulating more and more deaths and injured victims, traffic in Manaus seems to be an unsolvable problem. This is because there was an expectation that the city council would sign the contract with the company responsible for installing the new speed cameras on April 10th. However, the agreement was not formalized.

The radars were even to be installed in the same month and the city council even published the list of roads where monitoring would be implemented. But the measure did not come to fruition.

The service will cost R$23 million to the public coffers, but there is no set start date.
