All eyes are on the small business sector this May 1st, the date on which Labor Day is celebrated. Data from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Cage) indicate that, in 2023, this sector generated more than 46 thousand jobs in Pernambuco, while more than 1.5 thousand vacancies were eliminated in medium and large companies. In the months of January and February 2024 alone, small businesses generated 4,500 new formal jobs. Integrating the civil construction sector, the building construction segment, with 990 new jobs, has been leading the hiring ranking in the state.

According to economist and analyst at Sebrae/PE, Sylvia Siqueira, civil construction led to an increase in jobs due to the return on investments in the area. “These new positions involve both the direct construction areas and the engineering sector. This recovery, both in the private and public sectors, has generated the need for greater hiring”, he reinforces.

Micro-entrepreneur Robério Coelho, aged 30, in the construction sector, is a good example of someone who invested and expanded the team of employees. He works with precast for building structure construction. In Petrolina, in the Sertão do São Francisco, he tripled the number of employees at his company in just two years. When it was acquired by Coelho, in 2022, the company, which had already been in the market for 30 years, but had only 16 employees.

Investments in qualified labor, modernization and computerization of management and service allowed him to increase not only the number of employees, but also production and customer base. Today, the company has 56 professionals hired under the CLT regime. “I implemented customer service and management software, hired professionals to carry out modern management and reached customers that I did not serve. Production increased, we hired more professionals”, he states.

Sylvia Siqueira highlights that “as the economy shows better performance, the number of job creation should increase, and there may be months with more jobs created and others with fewer”, she considers. In addition to the building segment area, the areas of Elementary Education (365 vacancies) and combined office and administrative support services (352 vacancies) also stood out in job creation in the months of January and February.

For those who are evaluating the possibility of opening new positions, the economist gives some important tips. “Small businesses have many challenges when hiring, one of them is the tax structure they need to deal with. Therefore, he must carefully evaluate his production capacity and the technical capabilities of this professional to meet his demand”, she recommends.
