Young man is attacked with an iron bar during robbery in Botafogo | Rio de Janeiro

Rio – A young man was attacked with an iron bar during a robbery, on Tuesday night (23), in Botafogo, in the South Zone of Rio. The victim was exercising in the region when the crime happened.

The man said he was approached by a group of four criminals. One of the suspects immobilized him with a blow known as a “rear-naked choke”. Another assailant, who was carrying a piece of iron, hit the victim’s legs. Despite the violence, the injuries were not serious.

After the crimes, the suspects fled, taking the young man’s cell phone. The victim even asked for help from military police officers who were in the region, but the criminals were not found.

According to the Military Police, agents from the 2nd BPM (Botafogo) assisted the man and took him to the 10th DP (Botafogo), where the case was registered.

The young man managed to track the cell phone and the location indicated that the device was taken to Rua Sargento Silva Nunes, in Maré, in the North Zone of Rio.

When asked about the matter, the Civil Police have not yet responded. The space is open for manifestation.

Street robberies on the rise in the region

Data from the Institute of Public Security (ISP) show that there was an 11.7% increase in the number of street robberies, which include pedestrian robberies, cell phone robberies and bus robberies, in the area of ​​operation of the 2nd BPM in the first three months of this year compared to the same period last year. The battalion operates in the neighborhoods of Botafogo, Cosme Velho, Glória, Flamengo and Aterro do Flamengo.

According to the survey, 619 street robberies were recorded from January to March this year. In the same period of 2023, there were 554.

When the comparison is only in relation to the months of March of both years, there is also an increase in the number of crimes: 190 in 2024 compared to 155 in 2023, an increase of 22.6%.
