A software engineer from the United States decided to test the limits of the Mozilla Firefox browser by leaving an incredible 7,470 tabs open in the application for more than two years on her Mac. The case came to light when the professional used a social network to point out that the session of browser had not been restored, which resulted in the temporary loss of all tabs — however, she managed to resolve the problem and continues to have almost 7,500 tabs open in the little fox’s browser.

Lost but restored

The process of leaving more than 7,400 tabs open in the browser may seem strange, but, in the professional’s opinion, everything was practically a “part” of it. However, upon noticing that Firefox would not restore the session, Hazel (pseudonym used by the engineer) went to X (formerly Twitter) to comment in a frustrated manner about the situation.

“Firefox refuses to restore the session I’ve been keeping for over 2 years,” he wrote. “More than 7 thousand tabs being drained.”

More than a thousand responses appeared to try to help in some way. After finally being able to review her guides, Hazel returned to social media to thank everyone who helped. “I feel like a part of me has been restored,” she wrote.

The main reason for keeping so much content in the browser is nostalgia, according to the software engineer. “I like to poke around and look at groups of guides from months ago — it’s like a trip down memory lane about everything I was doing/learning/thinking,” she commented.

From what was published by Hazel, it is possible to understand that she constantly turns off her computer and makes use of Firefox’s “restore session” option, which restarts all tabs open when the browser was last closed.

It’s lighter than it looks

Another notable point is that the professional’s experience with the browser made her learn more about Firefox’s performance. According to Hazel, “the impact [de tantas abas abertas] in the memory [RAM do computador] it is marginal; The session file containing the tab information is only about 70 MB, and Firefox only loads a tab into memory if someone recently opened it,” he noted.

While Firefox seems to support more than 7,400 tabs without compromising the machine’s functionality — and it’s worth pointing out that she didn’t mention her computer’s configuration in the answers — Google launched a function that uses AI to organize the tabs, but only in the United States. United for now.
