SEMA presents public policies for reforestation during the Caatinga+ Journey

The Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change (SEMA) participated in the Jornada Caatinga+ Workshop. The event took place on the 23rd, at the Planet Hub for Impact and Innovation. The event, which aimed to boost and structure the impact business ecosystem in Ceará and promote the restoration of the Caatinga, brought together various actors from the public, private sector and civil society to discuss and propose entrepreneurial solutions to the biome’s challenges. This Sunday, April 28th, National Caatinga Day is celebrated.

The technician from the Flora Policy Cell (Ceflor), from the Biodiversity Coordination (Cobio/SEMA), Lucas Silva, gave a lecture on public policies for reforestation in the state of Ceará. He highlighted points such as the National Forest Inventory, State Law nº 17,929 which establishes the Afforestation, Reforestation and Environmental Education Program of the State of Ceará, Decree nº 32,146 which establishes and designates members for the Multi-participatory Working Group to prepare the Afforestation Project , Reforestation and Environmental Education of the State of Ceará, the Native Plant Species Valorization Program and the Seedling Donation Program.

Silva stated that “Ceará has 57% of its territory covered by types considered forestry, which is equivalent to 8.5 million hectares. Approximately half of the trees measured were considered healthy, while 14% of the trees were dead and 35% showed some type of health impairment”. He also said that the State Government program, through SEMA, has already donated more than 1 million seedlings of native species and reforested more than 35 hectares.

During the presentation, the SEMA technician also highlighted that reforestation is essential for the preservation Caatinga+ Journeyof the environment and for the sustainable development of Ceará and that SEMA’s mission is to promote the environmental sustainability of Ceará, reconciling social and economic development with the preservation of the environment. “The public policies presented at this event aim to encourage the planting of native trees and promote the recovery of the Caatinga”, he concluded.

Jornada Caatinga+ is an event that aims to boost and structure the impact business ecosystem in Ceará and promote the restoration of the Caatinga biome. The event brings together various actors from the public, private sector and civil society to discuss and propose solutions to the challenges of the Caatinga biome.
