Nearly 200,000 face severe food insecurity

IBGE research reveals that around 189 thousand people in Maranhão live in a situation of severe food insecurity.

MARANHÃO, April 26, 2024 – According to the Continuous National Household Sample Survey: Food Security 2023, carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), approximately 189 thousand Maranhão residents are facing a situation of severe food insecurity, characterized by hunger.

The data, released this Thursday (25), shows that the total number of Maranhão residents living with food insecurity, including mild, moderate or severe situations, reaches 1,016,000, while 1,314,000 people enjoy adequate food security.

The North and Northeast regions have the lowest proportions of food secure households, with 60.3% and 61.2%, respectively. This equates to 3.6 million households in the North and 12.7 million in the Northeast facing food-related challenges.

Across Brazil, of the 78.3 million permanent private households, 56,689,200 (72.4%) enjoy food security, while 21,610,800 are in a situation of food insecurity, covering different age groups.

The research highlights that severe food insecurity affects almost 600,000 children aged 0 to 4 and 1.765 million children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 across the country. Furthermore, 2.8% of the population aged 65 and over faces dietary restrictions.

Among households with severe food insecurity, 2,338,920 have up to three residents, 778,572 have four to six residents and 83,304 have seven or more residents.

The data also shows that rural areas have the highest proportion of hunger in the country, with 5.5% of rural households facing severe food insecurity, a percentage 1.6 points higher than the urban area.
