The Aquidauana Penal Establishment went through a real “fine comb” this Friday (26), during the 4th Phase of Operation Mute, promoted by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, through Senappen (National Secretariat for Penal Policies). The action takes place simultaneously across the country with the aim of identifying and removing cell phones as a way of combating illicit communication within penal units.

As released by Agepen (State Penitentiary System Administration Agency), the 4th Mute Phase has been carried out in Mato Grosso do Sul since last Monday (22) and ends today the inspections, which are a complement to the constant work that is already carried out by the Criminal Police in the state. The Jair Ferreira de Carvalho Penitentiary, the Dourados State Penitentiary and the Transit Prison were also inspected this week.

The action is coordinated by Sejusp (State Department of Justice and Public Security), through Agepen (State Penitentiary System Administration Agency) and its Gisp (Penitentiary System Intelligence Management).

At the Aquidauana prison, the fine-tooth combing began at around 8 am and is carried out by the unit’s criminal police officers, with support from Gisp.

The CEO of Agepen, Rodrigo Rossi Maiorchini, reinforces that, in addition to integration with this national operation, the institution has constantly carried out inspections for this purpose, as well as implementing technology in the visitor review and constant monitoring to curb and punish cases of corruption.

As part of Mute’s actions, screens will be installed over the pavilions of the state’s main prison units that do not yet have one. The objective is to curb drone throwing and launches, which are the main means of illicit entry into the state’s prison system.

The results of the inspections will be published by Senappen at the end of the operation across the country. Operation Mute was named after the word “mute” in English, reflecting the intention to silence the external communication of inmates, focusing especially on the seizure of prohibited communication devices such as cell phones.
