Paraná is the second most food secure state in Brazil, according to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) this Thursday (25).

The research shows that in 82.1% of households in the State, residents have access to quality food in sufficient quantity, which represents around 3.5 million households or 9.5 million people. The information comes from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) and was collected in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Across Brazil, the proportion of food secure households is 72.4%, or 78.3 million households, involving 151 million people. In the national ranking, Paraná was second only to Santa Catarina (88.8%). Rio Grande do Sul was 3rd, with 81.3%.

Of the most populous states in Brazil, Minas Gerais came in 6th, with 78.4%, São Paulo in 8th, with 76.5%, and Rio de Janeiro in 10th, with 76.2%. The index considers that these families’ food expenditures do not compromise other essential needs and that their residents are not concerned about a lack of food in the near future.

State Actions

The Government of Paraná has some initiatives to help guarantee quality food, such as Mais Merenda, which guarantees three meals per shift in state schools; Direct Purchase and the Comida Boa Food Bank, which guarantee the distribution of food to the social assistance network; and the Comida Boa Card, distributed to people registered with CadÚnico, with exclusive resources for food.
