The much talked about waterway connection between airports of Rio is finally on paper: the Companhia Carioca de Parcerias e Concessões (Ccpar) launches this Thursday (25) the bidding notice to choose the company that will be responsible for implementing and operating a new ferry connection in the city, between Santos Dumont and Tom Jobim. The document establishes that the trip, lasting 45 minutes, should cost R$20. The system will be made possible by a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with an estimated cost of R$106 million, with the city hall agreeing to pay up to R$24 million to make the project viable. The bidder who foresees a lower public investment, taking this limit as a reference, wins the bid. The bidding is based on economic feasibility studies of the project carried out by the private sector.

The implementation works are expected to last two years and the estimate is that 3.5 thousand people use the service daily, equivalent to around 10% of the number of passengers that travel through Rio’s international airport in a day. To do this, it will be necessary seven vessels small, with capacity for up to 100 passengers. The bidding is scheduled for June 6th. The connection between the airports will include a land leg. Of The ferries will depart and arrive from a terminal to be installed in the Marina da Glória area close to the Bossa Nova shopping mall. From there, the vessels will continue to the Galeão Beach, at the entrance to Ilha do Governador, a 35-minute journey. According to Globo, the city hall believes that the script could even change tourism option at Guanabara’s Bay, in a Rio version of the ferry service that connects the south of the island of Manhattan to Staten Island, in New York. In the case of the Rio crossing, the user will be able to observe the Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer among other tourist attractions.
