Craftsman from Pernambuco burned in robbery attempt reunites with family with help from RAV do HGE

In the early hours of April 15, artisan José Carlos dos Santos, 42 years old, was the victim of a violent robbery attempt while he slept near the Maceió bus station. In addition to stealing his money and some artisanal products, the criminals attacked him and set him on fire, resulting in burns covering 8% of his total body area.

José Carlos, known for his art of producing handcrafted pieces using recycled cans, is a pilgrim who, after separating from his companion in São Caetano, in Agreste Pernambuco, decided to take his art to the coast. The artisan passed through several cities until arriving in Maceió, where he offers his products to tourists on the beaches to support himself.

After the attack, José Carlos managed to ask for help from a cart driver who advised him to go to the UPA (Emergency Care Unit) in Jaraguá. Due to the severity of the burns, he was transferred to the HGE Burn Treatment Center (State General Hospital) where he is receiving the necessary care.

The HGE Lilac Room team, linked to the Violence Care Network (RAV), managed to locate José Carlos’ family, including his mother, brothers and other relatives. Social worker Rosângela Lopes highlighted the team’s commitment to reuniting the artisan’s family and helping him with his recovery.

The HGE Burn Treatment Center is a reference unit for assistance to victims of Medium and High Complexity burns, receiving patients from different parts of the state and even from other states. José Carlos expressed his desire to recover soon and return to his city to continue his art and life with more peace of mind.

Thus, with the help of HGE’s medical and social team, José Carlos is in the recovery process to overcome this difficult moment and move forward with his art and his life.
