The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, showed on a TV program a voting ballot in which his name and photo appear on the card a total of 13 times, including all ten spaces in the first row.

The ballot is a first version of the one that the country’s voters will receive on July 28, when they will vote for president. Maduro, in power since the death of Hugo Chávez in 2013, is seeking a third term.

In Venezuela, the voting ballot has a field for each party, with photos of the candidates supported by each party. According to the National Electoral Council, the choice of each party’s position on the ballot follows criteria such as the votes obtained in previous elections and the date of registration of the association.

The first position will be occupied by the PSUV (United Socialist Party of Venezuela), of which Maduro is a member. The other parties in the coalition that support the Chavista regime appear next, at the top and to the left of the ballot.

The decision was taken by the Supreme Court of Justice, aligned with the Venezuelan government, and also affected the opponent Henrique Capriles, who had already run in other elections against Chávez and Maduro himself.

Who is the opposing candidate

González is 74 years old and served as ambassador to Algeria between 1991 and 1993. He was also ambassador to Argentina in the first years of Hugo Chávez’s government (1999-2013).

He published several books and, as a member of the opposition, was an international representative of the Democratic Unity Roundtable between 2013 and 2015.

Considered a discreet candidate, one of González’s main challenges is to make his name recognized among voters in the short term, political analysts point out.
