Number of homeless people in Canoas jumps to 15 thousand

More than 15 thousand people are in public shelters after the flood that hit Canoas, in the metropolitan region. The water advanced over 60% of the municipality’s area, reaching the entire western part of the city, up to Rua Brasil, in the center.

According to City Hall, more than 180,000 people were affected and 80,000 properties are underwater.

Canoas City Hall is announcing, through its official website, lists with the names of people rescued and sheltered. The list provides the full names of those rescued and where they are sheltered in the municipality by Social Assistance and volunteer groups.

The social rescue work carried out involves more than a thousand people, including professionals and citizens willing to help. Services in shelters, transportation and donations rely on more than 3,600 volunteers.

Ransom requests

The municipality of Canoas has a communication channel for calls for help from the population in need of support. Requests must be made via WhatsApp from the Rescue Center – (51) 3236-2000. The number does not receive calls, only messages. According to the city hall, as of Sunday afternoon (5), more than 63,800 requests for rescue and help were received via telephone and WhatsApp.

Canoas Civil Defense guides the population do not insist on staying in homes in flooded neighborhoods and accept help from teams during rescue actions.

Donations

Among the items requiring increased donations are blankets, mattresses, bedding, hygiene and cleaning items and non-perishable food, among others. Donations can be taken to the Donation Center located in Cassol, located at Avenida Farroupilha, 5775, Marechal Rondon neighborhood.

The City Hall also accepts donations of any amount via PIX, the key to which is email [email protected].
