The Federal Highway Police (PRF) began, on Monday (22), the fourth edition of operation Ikto (an allusion to the God of travelers), which focuses on reducing the severity of accidents in critical points on Bahia’s federal highways.

The initiative continues until May 12th and directs inspection and traffic education actions to places where the most traffic collisions with injuries or deaths have been recorded, based on the analysis of statistical data.

The operation takes into account the main aspects that contribute to the occurrence of serious accidents, such as human factors, the road and the vehicle involved. During the IKTO IV period, ‘blitzes’ will be aimed at inhibiting conduct that creates a risk of traffic accidents. These include the lack of use of seat belts and other mandatory restraint devices, prohibited overtaking on stretches of single-lane roads, drunkenness and the use of cell phones while driving.

With intensive use of portable radars, the PRF will act to prevent hasty drivers from putting the lives and health of other drivers at risk. To give you an idea, just yesterday (23), on a single stretch of BR 324, more than 300 images of vehicles with incompatible speeds were captured. And many of them were traveling at speeds exceeding 50% of the road limit.

The actions will also focus on the inspection of motorcycles, whose occupants have been the main victims of traffic violence.

Police officers from all PRF police stations in Bahia were scheduled to participate in the operation, which is reinforced by the organization’s Motorcyclists and Traffic and Transport Inspection Groups.

Critical points

The critical points were defined based on surveys by the PRF’s Traffic Accident Registration, Expertise and Prevention Center, which identified the 10-kilometer stretches where the most serious collisions occurred, resulting in injuries or deaths.

The activities of IKTO IV will be directed to sections of BRs 101, 110, 116, 135, 324, 367, 415 and 418, which are under the jurisdiction of the Police Stations of Simões Filho, Feira de Santana, Itabuna, Vitória da Conquista and Eunápolis.
