Through an invitation made by Embrapa Roraima, Fábia de Mello Pereira and Bruno Souza, researchers from Embrapa Meio-Norte, visited the Roraima Unit to participate in the beginning of the execution of the TED Mel Roraima project. This Decentralized Execution Term (TED) was developed based on a parliamentary amendment and through the union between Embrapa Roraima, Embrapa Meio-Norte, Embrapa Amazônia Oriental, the Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA), the Beekeepers Cooperative of Roraima (RORAIMEL) and, later, the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (SEBRAE/Roraima). The project’s main objective is to strengthen the honey production chain in the state of Roraima and Embrapa Meio-Norte supports actions for the better development of this area. Since December 2023, Embrapa Meio-Norte has participated in coordination with Embrapa Roraima and Embrapa Amazônia Oriental to define the schedule of actions for TED Mel Roraima and to align campaign goals for its development. For Fábia de Mello, researcher, it is an initiative that will result in good results, as beekeepers have good productivity. According to the scientist, the same producers noticed that production has fallen year after year and the training will help to expand and develop this production chain in the region. For Bruno Souza, researcher, the diagnoses carried out in the field and in rounds of conversations with producers about production volumes and times, management during the off-season and native flowering in the North region were extremely important in gathering useful data for improving beekeeping production. of the state, in addition to knowing the needs of beekeepers. “A field person will provide support and accompany producers based on the management practices that Embrapa recommends and carry out a survey of the flowering to improve the native pasture to use as beekeeping flora”, mentioned the researcher. A visit by these producers, already included in TED, to Embrapa Meio-Norte and cooperatives in Piauí is also planned. Producers from Roraima will also talk to professionals who have been working to find the distinctive characteristics of Piauí honey to apply these tips to their honey production. “These producers will visit, in the municipality of Picos, the Central das Cooperativas Apícolas do Semiárido Brasileiro (CASA APIS) and talk to Teresa Raquel, the first honey sommèlier in Brazil, in an attempt to evaluate this material and show the importance of adding value to its products”, concluded Bruno Souza. The researchers left open the possibility of producers in Roraima working with stingless bees, as the researchers identified a meliponiculturist who claims to maintain a meliponary with around eighteen species of bees native to the state, something of inestimable value and great productive potential and commercial.
