Candidates registered with the Student Financing Fund (Fies) for the 1st semester of 2024 report that they are being hindered in the selection process due to the Ministry of Education (MEC) system. Technical failures, prolonged delays and long waiting lines are the main complaints of students competing for more than 67 thousand places to obtain a loan and finance their graduation.

In contact with the students, the MEC stated that it will not change the program dates. The selection process ends on April 30th. Among the students’ main complaints are: The electronic system through which students send documents upon registration has technical problems, the waiting lists are not “running” at the expected pace, therefore, thousands of students who were not approved in the first waiting for the call, the same person is being approved in more than one course option and the issue of short term, due to all the problems generated.

The Fies 2024 notice was only published on March 7, almost two months after the results of the National High School Exam (Enem) were released. In 2023, the document came out on January 27, before the test scores. Fies registrations ended on March 18, after some universities had already started the academic year. This meant that those approved, who would still have to go through all the pre-approval and registration procedures, missed the first weeks of classes.
