Samuel Edward L. Cox and Osvaldo Marinho Barreto: two cases where the “English” stole the show in police stories in ES. (Fabrício Christ and Disclosure)

Osvaldo Marinho Barreto became known in the State after escaping – through the front door of the Vila Velha III State Penitentiary (PEVV III) – on November 2, 2017. Before escaping, however, he left a message, in English, for the friends. In the text, written on a board located in the library, the man apologized for escaping and said he prayed for the inmates, in addition, he highlighted that his colleagues had become his family.

British detained

On Tuesday night (2), police were called to respond to a fight between a couple, with a car crashed on the North South Highway. The military contacted the 28-year-old victim. The woman reported that her ex-boyfriend, Samuel Edward L. Cox, had stolen her car. When she asked him where the vehicle was, the man punched her in the face and back. Afterwards, she was involved in a traffic accident. He even abandoned the car at a gas station.

The suspect did not speak Portuguese, so the police spoke to him in English. According to the police report, the British man said he didn’t know about any car and denied the attack. The victim stated that she wanted to act against her ex, and that she would go to the police station with the team. Then the swearing began.

When the police said that the suspect would have to go to the police station, the foreigner began to deny it, saying that he could not be arrested as he was from the United Kingdom. The man was then handcuffed and placed in the security compartment of the vehicle.

On the way to the police station, the suspect cursed the police officers. He said he would end their careers, as he was from England, and that the police had to “look at his race”. See below the phrases he declared that were described in the police report:

  • You guys are in really f****** trouble” = You guys are in really f****** trouble”
  • “I’m gonna f*** your career” = I’m going to f*** your career
  • “Look at my race” = Look at my race
  • “I’m from England! You shouldn’t do this to me” = I’m from England! You shouldn’t do this to me

At the police station, according to the bulletin, while the police officers were carrying out the incident, the suspect went to drink water from the water fountain, pressed the button with his foot (since he was handcuffed), lost his balance and hit his chest on a shelf. He had to be taken to the Emergency Room (ER) in Praia do Suá to be bandaged. There, the doctor noticed that his eye was swollen, according to the military, due to the accident with his ex’s car.

The suspect, however, told another version: he said that he was attacked by his ex and that he was unconscious. Therefore, the doctor advised him to go to the State Urgency and Emergency Hospital (Heue), where the man underwent a CT scan, which showed nothing, and was discharged. Only after that did he return to the police station.

The Civil Police reported that Samuel Edward L. Cox was charged with “facts, threats and insults, both under the Maria da Penha Law. He was sent to the Viana Triage Center (CTV)”.

Osvaldo Marinho Barreto escaped through the front door of the Vila Velha III State Penitentiary (PEVV III), on November 2, 2017. Before escaping, he left a message, in English, for his colleagues. In the text, written on a board located in the library, the man apologized for escaping and said he prayed for the inmates, in addition, he highlighted that his colleagues had become his family.

Osvaldo was recaptured on September 27, 2023, by the Civil Police of the State of Pará. The information was confirmed by the State Secretariat of Justice (Sejus), which further stated that, due to a court decision extinguishing the punishability of the crime committed by Osvaldo, he was released.

He was admitted to the Espírito Santo prison system on March 11, 2016, for falsifying a public document. Due to the escape, Sejus initiated a Disciplinary Administrative Process (PAD) to investigate the facts, which resulted in the application of a 10-day suspension penalty to the detriment of an employee who had helped in the escape.
