Truck with census takers falls off bridge in rural area

A wooden bridge gave way in the region of Peixe, in the south of Tocantins, as a truck with census takers from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) was crossing. Despite the scare, no one was injured.

The accident happened on Monday afternoon (1st). In the vehicle there were two census takers who were traveling through the rural area to collect information for the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD).

The truck fell into the Santo Antônio River, after the head of the wooden bridge gave way. The accident was near the rural region known as ‘Agropique’. It had been raining and the river was a little above normal.

The vehicle’s front was submerged in the river and its rear was raised. The workers managed to escape without injuries. Then, a tractor from a rural property was used to pull the truck.

The city of Peixe reported that it is working on making concrete beams to replace concrete bridges in the municipality. This replacement service will begin after the rainy season.
