Germany and Italy will have an extra place in the next edition of the Champions League, in 2024/25, the first in the new format, with 36 clubs starting in its final phase. The two countries will have five representatives each and will be defined by the positions of the national leagues.

The two extra places are given to the two countries with the best performance in UEFA competitions in the current season: Champions League, Europa League It is Conference League. Italy and Germany reached the necessary score in the ranking created by the entity and can no longer be reached by England and France.

The two leagues still have three clubs alive in the current season’s European tournaments. Roma and Atalanta, in the Europa League, and Fiorentina, in the Conference League, continue to score for the Italians. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, in the Champions League, and Bayer Leverkusen, in the Europa League, are the Germans in contention.

Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 victory against PSG not only guaranteed an advantage in the semi-final clash, but also assured the yellow team’s place in the next Champions League. Paris’ defeat eliminated France’s chances of obtaining the extra spot – Ligue1 is fourth in the rankings.

England occupies third place in the coefficient created by UEFA to define extra places. However, only Aston Villa remains alive in European tournaments – it is a semi-finalist in the Conference League – and the country no longer catches up with Italy and Germany.

UEFA created the ranking to define two of the four extra places in the next Champions League. The rest will go to a national champion and to the country ranked fifth in the federations’ coefficient, which considers the last five seasons.
