The official recognition of the traditional feijoada Aunt Surica entered the calendar of commemorative dates in the State of Rio de Janeiro, through a project presented by the state deputy Dionísio Lins and sanctioned by the governor Claudio Castro this Wednesday (03/04). Feijoada will be celebrated annually on the second Sunday of November, stimulating tourism, leisure and boosting the local economy, with the creation of jobs and sales of products.
At 83 years old, Iranette Ferreira BarcellosMore known as Aunt Surica, is an emblematic figure of Rio samba. In addition to her remarkable voice, she became famous for serving her feijoada at events in the Portela for 17 years, totaling more than 2 million dishes. The tradition began with Aunt Vincentina and was rescued by Surica, with the support of “meerkats”, collaborators who helped make the dish known among samba dancers and personalities.
Last year, Tia Surica held the edition of her feijoada at Rival Theaterat Cinelândia. It is worth mentioning that feijoada had already been officially recognized as Historical and Cultural Heritage of the State of Rio de Janeiro in 2021.
Tia Surica is the honorary president of Portela, a member of the school’s old guard and a true icon of the Rio suburbs.
