In the turbulent political scenario of Mato Grosso, the announced visit of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has generated heated debates and divergent opinions. The councilor for Cuiabá, Edna Sampaio (PT), expressed her view of Bolsonaro’s agenda in the state, characterizing it as an act of desperation and fear of being arrested by the Federal Police (PF).

In his statements, Sampaio spared no criticism of the former president, pointing to an alleged attempt by Bolsonaro to escape possible legal consequences. “A sign of desperation and I think that the population of Mato Grosso who voted for him needs to look at what is actually good for them and not defend a person who clearly conspired against all of us”, stated the parliamentarian.

Bolsonaro’s presence is scheduled for April 8, the date that marks the anniversary of the capital Cuiabá. In addition to the capital, the former president will visit other cities such as Diamantino and Campo Novo do Parecis, ending his agenda with participation in an agricultural fair in Sinop, on April 17th.

Federal deputy Amália Barros (PL) announced Bolsonaro’s schedule through a video on her Instagram account, recorded alongside the former president himself on March 9. However, Bolsonaro’s visit is not without controversy. The former president has been ineligible for eight years, according to a decision by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), which raises questions about his active participation in politics.

Edna Sampaio emphasized the judicial context involving Bolsonaro, mentioning his confiscated passport and his possible imminent arrest. “He could be arrested at any time because he is in a process where his passport was collected,” warned the councilor.

In addition to conjectures about the reasons for the visit, it is speculated that Bolsonaro’s presence is intended to strengthen old political alliances and boost the pre-candidacies of federal deputy Abilio Brunini (PL) in Cuiabá and lawyer Flávia Moretti (PL) in Várzea Grande.

The political dynamics in Mato Grosso seem to be increasingly polarized, with different forces seeking to consolidate their space. Not only will Bolsonaro be present in the region, but there is also the possibility of a visit from former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), if PT deputy Lúdio Cabral is chosen to head the Federation ticket formed by PT, PV and PCdoB in the elections this year.

In view of these events, it is clear that the political scenario in Mato Grosso will continue to be the scene of intense debates and movements in the coming months, as the elections approach and the different political forces seek to consolidate their strategies and support.
