25-year-old foreign university student reports that she was a victim of gang rape in a nightclub in Lapa | Rio de Janeiro

The Center’s Women’s Assistance Police Station (Deam) will investigate the gang rape of a 25-year-old foreigner inside a nightclub in Lapa, in the Central Region of RJ, last Sunday (31). The case was registered on Tuesday night (2), after the victim reported the case to the Commission for the Defense of Women’s Rights of the Legislative Assembly of RJ (Alerj).

The victim reported that, after meeting a boy at the Portal Club nightclub – which is located next to three police stations on Rua do Lavradio – she agreed to go with him to a more reserved space in the nightclub, known as the ‘dark room’.

In this place, she said there were several men and that she was raped by them. The woman highlighted that she believes the men were friends of the boy she had previously met.

She also said that during the abuse she lost consciousness and that she does not know if something was put in her drink, as it was “open bar”.

When she regained consciousness, she looked for her friend to tell her about the situation. The student said she then reported the rape to nightclub employees, including security guards, who allegedly tried to dissuade her from going to the police station. The victim’s friend would have witnessed the entire situation.

This Monday, she contacted the Alerj Commission for the Defense of Women’s Rights to report the crime and register it at the police station.

The victim, who had arrived in Rio on Sunday and would go to Bahia on Monday (1st), stated that he intended to stay in Brazil to learn Portuguese for at least a year, but that he now wants to return to his country of origin.

After registering the incident, the young woman was taken to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) for forensic examinations.

The Portal Club nightclub was contacted and said that it strongly repudiates crime and will never support any type of intolerance, oppression or violence against women. The establishment said it welcomed the victim and said it will provide images from the nightclub’s camera circuit to the police.

The Civil Police have not yet commented on the case.

According to data from the Public Security Institute (ISP), there were around 4,000 records of collective rapes in the state in ten years, since 2012.
