O fake alligator that mobilized a team from the Fire Department and scared residents of Vespasiano, Grande BH, was done by a biologist. A fan of reptiles, the specialist used the sculptor’s skills to create the replica that would decorate a jabuticaba tree planted in the garden of his house, in a gated community in the city.

Biologist and sculptor Adriano Marques de Souza began experimenting with replicas when he was six years old. “I always liked animals and used clay to sculpt. In graduate school, I used this skill that I enjoy to do university work. Then, I started to diversify and people kept asking me to make animals for them,” he said.

The confusion happened at the biologist’s weekend house. He was not at the scene. “When I woke up, my wife talked about a post she saw on social media about firefighters trying to rescue my alligator,” he says.

The owner of the sculpture had already warned neighbors that it was a decoration, but the night watchman did not receive the message. When passing by the place, around 4 am, he was scared by the alligator and called the Fire Department. At the scene, agents used the necessary immobilization techniques, but discovered that it was a replica. The scene was recorded on video. (Watch below).

“There we have a mix of techniques used. Mainly 3D printing, with refinement that creates the anatomical details”, explained Souza about the strategy to give realism to the doll.

This Tuesday, the biologist went to the condominium to apologize to his neighbors for the misunderstanding. “If I were to put another [réplica]it will be birds or herons, which don’t attract as much attention”, he joked about what he will do to avoid new problems.

Firefighter Guidance

Despite the false alarm, the Fire Department’s guidance is for the population to call the corporation in any chance of risk. “If the person does not know whether the animal is real or fake, they should not put themselves at risk. Firefighters have standard procedures for capture using appropriate techniques. Call the Fire Department by calling 193 in any event”, explained Sergeant Allan Azevedo.
