More than 42 thousand people wait on the organ transplant line across Brazil. In Bahia alone, there are more than three thousand people waiting. To mark the beginning of the “One Heart: be life in someone’s life” campaign, the Electronic Organ Donation Authorization (Aedo) was launched yesterday, which seeks to speed up and make the organ donation process more efficient.

For those who wish to be a donor, Aedo is a way to register and formalize their wishes through an official document, made digitally at any Notary’s Office in Bahia.

The initiative, developed by the Federal Council of the Brazilian Notarial College and the National Council of Justice, is based on the ease, agility, free of charge and authenticity of the procedure.

The coordinator of the state transplant system in Bahia, Eraldo Moura, explains the importance of this initiative to reduce the rate of family refusal to donate organs.

“Many families do not authorize the donation because they are unaware of their loved one’s wishes. The importance of this new tool is to be able to have a registry where the family and health professionals will be able to know the wishes of that individual”, he believes.

The authorization process is simple. The person accesses the platform (www.aedo.org. br), fills out the form, selects the preferred registry office and schedules a video conference. During the procedure, she declares her identity and her desire to be a donor.

The president of the Colégio Notarial do Brasil – Bahia Section (CNB/BA), Giovani Ginaellini, reinforces the need for contact with the family at this time.

“The donation can only be made if the family consents. In other words, it is important that the donor person talks to the family that made this electronic authorization, because the family will be consulted when the person dies”, he warns.

The platform requires a digital certificate to electronically sign the form, and it is possible to use the ICP Brasil certificate or the notarized digital certificate, which is free.

Awareness

Furthermore, the “Um Só Coração” campaign, linked to the launch of Aedo, seeks to raise awareness among the population about the importance of organ donation. “We want to bring this issue closer to society, clarify doubts and encourage dialogue within families”, highlighted Eraldo Moura.

Currently, in Bahia the greatest demand is for kidney transplants, followed by corneas and liver. Brazil is recognized for having the largest public transplant system in the world.
