Mayor of RJ used the artificial intelligence tool to formulate his speech at the inauguration of the new Impa department
The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), read a speech made by ChatGPT during the inauguration event of the new department of Impa (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics), located in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, this Tuesday (2.Apr .2024).
According to Paes, he used the artificial intelligence tool to demonstrate the importance of disciplines such as engineering and mathematics for the sustainable development of countries.
“I just made this speech that I just read, getting into Impa, in my car. I asked ChatGPT to prepare a speech for me to read in front of the president of Republic […] I thank artificial intelligence and not my intelligence for this part of the speech”he said.

In another part of his speech, this time written by himself, the mayor of Rio said that it is important for Brazil “retain these talents”in reference to Impa students. “This project that we inaugurate today is our crown jewel”he stated.
Alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), ministers Camilo Santana (Education), Luciana Santos (Science), Anielle Franco (Racial Equality) and Silvio Costa Filho (Ports and Airports) were present at the event.
Impa Tech is a higher education institute financed by the federal government, through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and the Ministry of Education, and has a partnership with the city of Rio de Janeiro.
For 2024, the federal government will invest R$18.7 million in Impa Tech.
Speaking at the inauguration, Lula blamed the “elite” Brazil is behind other countries in higher education and compared Brazil to Chile and Argentina.
“We are behind because for many decades and many centuries the elite that ran this country did not imagine children of poor people, children of the middle class, studying. Those who studied were those who could send their children to Paris, London, Madrid, Harvard.”he stated.
